Contact Lenses for Your Child

Whether your child doesn’t want to wear their glasses anymore or they simply want to choose whether or not they wear glasses for the day, contact lenses are a great alternative. They’re great for playing sports, especially activities that require helmets or take place in the rain.

Before they can wear contact lenses, though, they need to get fitted. As a parent, you may have some questions. Below, we’ll let you know when is a good age to start wearing contacts, when lenses shouldn’t be worn, what to do if your child has “hard to fit” eyes, and more.

What Is A Good Age To Start Wearing Contacts?

The right age to start wearing contact lenses will vary in part based on your child’s maturity level. We usually recommend waiting until the child is anywhere from 10 to 12 years old. Wearing contacts comes with a fair amount of responsibility, though they can still safely be worn at younger ages. Often, daily disposable contact lenses are a great and safe option for kids.

Who Cannot Wear Contact Lenses?

There are certain conditions that may make your child “hard to fit” for contact lenses. Dry eyes and astigmatism are the most common of these problems that we encounter. In most situations, your child will still be able to get contact lenses, they will just need a more specialized fit.

When Shouldn’t You Wear Your Contact Lenses?

Tap water can cause be unhealthy with contact lenses, which means your child shouldn’t wear them when in the shower. We also advise against wearing contact lenses in the pool, but this may be done with a pair of tight-fitting goggles.

Whether or not your child can wear contact lenses while sleeping will vary based on the type of lenses that they get. However, it is a good idea to get your child in the habit of regularly removing their lenses before they go to bed. In many situations, this means removing them every night before they go to bed. Generally, extended wear lenses are not recommended for kids.

Does it hurt to get fit with Contact Lenses?

No, your contacts should not cause you to feel pain. Wearing them for the first time can be an odd sensation, causing eyes to water as they get used to the feeling. However, this feeling should be similar to touching your eye. Sometimes, if a piece of dust or debris is under the lens, there will be discomfort. Simply removing the lenses and rinsing them with contact solution can often fix this issue.

Tips for The First Week

There are a few things you can do when your child wears contacts for the first week. For instance, you want to make sure the lenses are being thoroughly cleaned. This is essential for protecting your child’s eyes from infection.

Along with that, you’ll want to make sure they don’t touch their eyes too much, which can be temping when adjusting to the sensation of having lenses touching their eyes.

Finally, you may want to purchase some lubricating eye drops for them to use. This ensures their eyes stay properly hydrated especially with prolonged computer use or dry conditions.
