Dry Eye FAQs

Why Do People Get Dry Eye?

Many things can cause a patient to develop dry eye. You may have several causes behind your case, but some people never figure out what caused it. No matter what the cause of it is, there are a variety of treatments that can relieve this condition. You may have dry eye because you sit at a computer much of the time. Long hours of computer use can cause your eyes not to blink as much as they should and this can mean dry eyes.

If you spend time in a room with a fan that's too large for it or that has too much air-conditioning, this is another cause. If you have certain medical conditions such as diabetes or autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, this can also be a cause. It can also be caused by taking medications such as allergy medications and a number of antidepressants. Getting older is also a common cause, as is dry air.

What Are Dry Eye Symptoms?

You need to see an eye doctor if you have the symptoms of dry eye syndrome. This condition can cause the eyes to hurt, burn, sting, or feel dry and turn red. Eye irritation is common, as are mucus strings coming from the eyes. Many people have dry eyes or feel eye strain from this condition and the eyes may be sore. If your eyes feel gritty or like there's something in them, you may have dry eye.

Are There Dry Eye Treatments?

There are several treatments that you may want to use for your dry eye. Some of these are prescription eye drops, but there are others as well. If you need help with the dryness and inflammation that this condition can cause, visit one of our optometrists to get treatments.
