Atropine Eye Drops
For children, this is a form of myopia control that can be prescribed to slow its progression. Atropine is the same medication often used to dilate the eyes during an eye exam. With a different, lower dosage of this medication for children, their myopia progression can be halted, or at least greatly slowed down. To get these results from the eye drops, the drops have to be administered to your child's eyes every day.
These eye drops are usually prescribed by an eye doctor to be administered at night right before bed. It can take a little time for a child to get into the routine of getting eye drops, but this can be an effective myopia control method that children get used to after a few days.
Ortho-K Contact Lenses
While most children don't use contact lenses for their vision correction, ortho-k contact lenses are specially designed to create changes in the eye that help with myopia. These contacts are inserted into the eyes at bedtime and they are worn by the child all night. Then, upon waking, they are removed. These contact lenses can slow myopia's progression or stop it completely. They are used to gently reshape the eye a little at night so that the eye is shaped more rounded throughout the day.
As this is happening, the child won't have to wear glasses each day during the treatments. This is another effective method of myopia control that has long been used in children. It can help a child to see much better when they are an adult than they would have without the contacts. It can be tricky to get children used to it, but it can be done with a little patience and repetition.
